The MicroLine 600D is a multi-function laser tool for the

production of PCBs. The drilling of microvias and direct

structuring of conductors and solder masks opens the path to

the HDI market for PCB manufacturers. Producers of flexible

and rigid-flexible PCBs will especially profit from its precision

contour cutting. Moreover, the MicroLine 600D can be used for

structuring, drilling and cutting a number of materials,

including ceramics, polymers and LTCC.

The MicroLine 600D cuts clean contours in all of the usual

materials used in printed circuit board production, such as FR4

multilayer circuit boards, flex circuit boards, flex-rigid circuit

boards, ceramics, LTCC and PTFE substrates up to a thickness

of around 40 mils. The precisely-focused UV laser cuts or

scribes all layers to create precise, smooth edges. This process

is also suitable for assembled circuit boards, and can be used to

repair the boards.

The main application area for the MicroLine 600L is the drilling

of microvia holes in HDI circuit boards. The UV laser can

penetrate copper covering layers, as well as epoxy-resin and

glass fiber, in one processing step. This involves such precise

control of the laser energy that the lower conductor path layer

only becomes slightly roughened and simultaneously cleaned,

which enhances plating. Unlike CO and hybrid laser systems,

the MicroLine 600D does not require the use of a second laser

or plasma cleaning.

laser cutting titanium

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Titanium is an interesting material to laser cut because of the thermal conductivity and reaction to oxygen.  Laser cutting services such as ours work with this material in thin foil form and need to be well versed in material handling just as much as cutting.  The benefit of laser cutting these materails is that you can limit material distortion, design much more intricate patterns, and achieve tighter tolerances than other cutting technologies.  We use pulsed lasers to decrease the heat affected zone to the smallest possible amount.  The UV laser technicians have designed tools specific to each metal type and thickness to give us the highest quality and longest lasting parts, because we understand the conditions these precision parts are used in.  Laser cutting services are all about equipment and experience and A-laser hase the best of both.

Laser cut thermal transfer materials

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Thermal transfer materials are being laser cut at A-laser due to our ability to yield high quality, tight tolerance parts in a wide range of substrates.  Many of these applications are gasket like shapes requiring exact placement of fixturing holes to ensure the product has the ideal functionality.  Our laser cutting service focuses on producing parts to 1/2 mil tolerances every time we turn on the machines.  Laser cutting thin materials requires additional attention to handling and storage, so our processes are designed to protect the precision parts we create.

laser cutting silicon

Friday, April 30th, 2010

We are laser cutting silicon using our UV frequency lasers and are exploring the applications for this material is mems devices.  The UV lasers give us a very precise and very clean cut, but we are still hoping to remove about 3 microns of debris.  The laser systems are set up with a very good vacuum system already, but we are wondering if we should look for added vacuum on these jobs or try to create some sort of mask.  The laser cut mask idea is interesting and we will run trials to see if this has any effect on the substrate.  We hoped there would be an easy cleaning method available for these precision parts, but are being told that those will not work and we have to stop it before being deposited.  Laser cut mems applications are growing and we have some of the best equipment to meet these demands.

More about laser cut reball stencils

Friday, April 16th, 2010

A-laser is looking to create a few standard PN’s to create easier ordering for some of our laser cutting services, especially our laser cut reball stencils.  This is one of the products that we see the most reorders from, thus making it an ideal starting point for an online shopping opportunity for our laser cutting service customers.  Reball stencils come in hundreds of different designs, so we will begin with those that we see most often.  An item we are curoius about is whether there would be value to offering this product using both PEEK and Kapton materials.  Both offer exceptional insulating properties, though one is a thermoset and the other a thermoplastic.  These stencils can typically be cut and shipped within 24 hours of receiving the order due to the ease fo CAD driven cutting processes.  We want to make sure we are the highest quality laser cutting service around and it’s important to drive toward ease of access as well.

laser cutting BGA reball stencils

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

A-laser, the laser cutting service division from FCT Assembly, has been cutting BGA reball stencils for a number of years.  Customers buy reball stencils from us due to the superior quality of the cut, accuracy of the design and fine pitch detail we are able to achieve.  UV laser cutting provides a very clean part every time without the need for added cleaning procesess to remove high levels of carbon.  We also know that turn time can be critical for these pieces and can typically get them out within 24 hours of an order placement.  Our laser cutting applications are widely varied, but this is one that we have done for years and know well.

laser micromachining flex circuit zif ends

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Our uv lasers are ideal for laser cutting zif ends on flex circuits.  The beam diameter of less than 20 microns and dead on table movement allow us to make those cuts more accurately than other cutting methods.  Additionally, the UV frequency cuts kapton in such a manner that virtually no carbon is left behind to cause shorts in the part.  Our laser operators are trained to recognize and achieve the highest quality possible.  Laser cutting services are becoming an integral part of flex circuit processing and A-laser will lead the way.
